Self-Publishing

After several long months of hard work my latest publishing venture arrived this morning. Publish Now! will be available from most branches of WH Smith here in the UK and abroad. If you have problems locating a copy, you can order direct from me. Look to your right to see how you can place your order. I’ve included below the editorial that appears in the magazine that I think sums up my intentions. Let me know what you think.

Welcome to Publish Now!

“Doing what you love is the cornerstone of having abundance in your life”
Wayne Dyer.

Welcome to the first edition of Publish Now! Books and publishing have been in my blood for as long as I can remember. I have spent the last 20 years working in the publishing industry from online bookselling to self-publishing. The idea for a magazine dedicated to the self-publishing industry came out of the realisation that today the tools to self-publish your own work are now just a mouse click away, but an easily accessible guide to self-publishing was still unavailable in the marketplace.

The publishing industry has dramatically changed over the last few years. Even in the high street the bookselling landscape has transformed. With the arrival of the eBook and print on demand services, it is now a practical possibility to start your own publishing business. Many people now have successful publishing businesses writing and selling eBooks online. And with a plethora of self-publishing services at your fingertips, you can get into print for surprisingly little financial investment.

What was vanity publishing has now evolved into a business model that all self-publishers can use. Whether you want to write a mainstream bestseller, or have some expertise in a niche area that you know other people share, you can distribute this knowledge via the Internet, or the traditional print route. Your local bookshop has woken up to the fact that they need to support local authors where they can to keep new ideas coming into their market.

Self-publishing is also a means to maintain control over your work, and reap the rewards of the many hours you will spend marketing and promoting your book. The publishing industry issues thousands of new books each year. Clearly all of these titles can’t receive a marketing budget to ensure they are successful. When you self-publish your work you are in control of this important aspect of your publishing activities. You know your book inside out, and are the best person to promote your work in the media. But perhaps the most important aspect of the control you have when self-publishing is that you and you alone see the financial and critical rewards that your efforts bring to your business.

And of course when you self-publish you are starting a new small business. In these financially testing times, starting a new business may seem like madness when in fact this is the perfect time to start a new enterprise. What’s more, with the relatively low costs that self-publishing involves, you can have your new publishing business up and running in no time. Starting a new business can be a daunting prospect, but as you have already proven, you have the patience, drive and enthusiasm to write your own book; so why not apply those traits and self-publish your work.

In this issue of Publish Now! you will find practical features on how to start your own publishing business, as well as inspiration from a wide range of people that have taken the plunge and are now successful self-publishers. If you have often thought that you would like to publish your own book or magazine, this magazine will show you how.

The days of the publishing monoliths that controlled every aspect of the publishing industry are gone. With the rise of the citizen journalist anyone can now publish his or her own work for the world to read. From blogging to full self-publishing businesses, you will find all the tools you need to become a successful self-publisher within the pages of Publish Now!

Once again welcome to Publish Now! that aims to become the hub around which the self-publishing industry orbits. There has never been a more exciting time in publishing than right now. With print on demand, Google’s march to digitise millions of books, traditional publishers finally embracing the eBook, and of course the continued rise of the Internet as a distribution medium; establishing your own self-publishing business now is perfect timing.

If you’re already a self-publisher, are thinking of taking the plunge or would just like to make contact, drop me a line. Tell me what you liked about Publish Now! What do you think can be improved and what would you like to see in future issues of the magazine? Publish Now! is your magazine designed to help, support and advise all budding self-publishers.
